Houston Rockets Team History

The Houston Rockets are a member of the NBA’s Western Conference. The Rockets have won two NBA Championships and four Western Conference titles. The team was founded in 1967 as the San Diego Rockets, but moved to Houston ahead of the start of the 1971-72 NBA season. The 1980-1981 Rockets made a run to the NBA Finals despite posting a losing record in the regular season (having finished 40-42). They were defeated in the finals by the Boston Celtics in six games. In the 1985-1986 season, the Rockets defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, where they were again matched up against the Boston Celtics, where the Celtics once again defeated the Rockets in six games. The Rockets did not experience playoff success again until 1992-93 season, when under coach Rudy Tomjanovich, a former Rockets player, they won the Midwest Division. The next two seasons would mark the golden era of Rockets basketball. In the 1993-94 season, the Rockets won a then-franchise record 58 games and went on to defeat the New York Knicks in seven games to win their first NBA Championship. The team got off to a slow start in the 1994-95 season, but went on a strong run in the playoffs that culminated in sweeping the Orlando Magic in four games to claim their second consecutive NBA title.
