Houston Astros Team History

The Houston Astros began play in 1962 and were initially known as the Colt .45s before changing their name in 1965. In 1980, after signing local hero Nolan Ryan in the offseason, the Astros battled the ultimate World Champion Philadelphia Phillies in a five-game National League Championship Series (NLCS) that saw four games go into extra innings. The Astros returned to the NLCS in 1986 to participate in another thrilling matchup with the eventual World Champions when the Astros were defeated in six games by the New York Mets. Starting in 1993, the Astros began a successful run that saw them post seven consecutive winning seasons, highlighted by three postseason appearances. The team was led by the Hall of Fame duo Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. In 2000, the team moved into the brand new Enron Field (later changed to Minute Maid Park). In 2005, the Astros made it to their first World Series, but were swept by the Chicago White Sox. In 2013, the Astros moved to the American League, and two years later advanced to the postseason with a rebuilt roster. In 2017, the Astros surged to 101 wins and beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a thrilling seven game series to earn the team its first World Series Championship in franchise history. They went on to make the ALCS the following three seasons, falling just short of winning it all in the 2019 World Series in seven games.

Where Do the Houston Astros Play Their Home Games?

The Astros play their home games at Minute Maid Park, which opened back in 2000. It is located in downtown Houston and has a seating capacity of over 41,000. The park was built on the site of the former Union Station, which was completed in 1911 and served as the main passenger rail station for the city of Houston for the next seven decades until the station was effectively abandoned in 1974 when the rail service moved to a new Amtrak station. The ballpark’s design incorporated the historic Union Station building, repurposing the building into a team store and office space for the club. The Astros have completed significant renovations to the ballpark in recent years and created new social spaces and significantly upgraded food and beverage offerings. A new social area in right field with a premium local food offering will be open for fans in the 2021 season.

Houston Astros All-Time Greats

The Astros have had many standout players in team history. Jose Cruz (1975-1987) is one of the most popular players in the history of the franchise. He was a two-time All-Star and led the NL in hits in 1983. He hit .300 or better in six of his seasons with the club. Craig Biggio (1988-2007) played 20 seasons for the Astros, logging games at catcher, second base, and centerfield. He was a seven-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner at second base. Biggio finished his career with over 3,000 hits. Jeff Bagwell (1991-2005) won Rookie of the Year in 1991 and over the course of his 15-year career posted stellar numbers, hitting 449 home runs and driving in 1,529 runs. He was a four-time All-Star, and in 1994, he won the Gold Glove and was named NL MVP. In 1999, Lance Berkman (1999-2010) joined teammates Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio as a member of the “Killer Bs.” Over 12 years with the Astros, Berkman was an offensive force, hitting 326 homers and driving in over 1,000 runs. He was a five-time All-Star with the Astros and finished in the top five of MVP voting four times.

Houston Astros Current Star Players

The Astros have had a star-studded squad during their recent run of success. Jose Altuve is already one of the best players in franchise history, with six All-Star appearances and three batting titles to his name. He won the AL MVP in 2017 and finished third in 2016. Alex Bregman is a two-time All-Star and finished fifth in AL MVP voting in 2018 and second in 2019, when he hit 41 home runs and led the AL in walks. Other great Astros players like Zack Greinke, Carlos Correa, Lance McCullers, Jr., Yordan Alvarez, and Michael Brantley give fans plenty of other reason to come to Minute Maid Park to cheer on the team.
